Modern Industry

Modern industry has changed our way of life. Now we can travel by bus, ship or plane instead of walking or riding a horse. We can communicate with① one another over long distances by telegram, telephone, fax② or E-mail, without sending a letter. We can use electric appliances③such as washing machines, refrigerators④, electric ovens⑤, TV sets and videos to help us do or reduce housework or to enjoy.

In the meantime, modern industry has seriously polluted our environment. The products of the modern industry, cars, trains, planes, and buses, release a great deal of exhaust gases into the air. Factories discharge⑥ impurities⑦ and chemicals into the water and release gases into the air. As a result, our air and water are seriously polluted.

These problems, however, can be solved through further industrial development. In some countries, trains are run not by coal but by electricity, and cars are driven by solar energy. Families have begun to use propane gas⑧ instead of coal to cook their food, thus reducing air pollution. Scientific measures have been taken so that waste discharged by industry can be purified before it goes into air or water. Definitely, the more advanced industry will be, the more capable we are of treating its pollution.
